Lesson Plans
Tools
1. In a whole group setting, students will be shown various pictures of ancient tools and modern day tools. (Examples of tools used in the past include: axes, scrapers, knives, drills, and soapstone bowls. Examples of present day tools include: hammers, axes, drills, saws, and eating utensils.) Working together the students will decide if the tools were used in the past or the present. The students will sort the pictures into Past and Present categories.
2. Next the teacher will lead a discussion about how and what these tools were used for-both past and present.
3. The students and teacher will work together to brainstorm a list of materials to make tools that people in the past would have access to. Examples are: sticks, plants, dirt, raw hide (the equivalent of string or rope), glue (made from deer skin), stones, and clay.
4. Now the students will have an opportunity to design their own tool. Give each student paper, markers, colored pencils, crayons, etc. The students should draw a picture of a tool that they make up. Then they should write an explanation about it. This should include things like: How was the tool used? or What was it used for?, etc..
5. After each student has completed the assignment they should share their creations with the class.
