Making Pottery

1.      Show students various pictures of Native American pottery.  Discuss what makes each piece individual.  Make sure to point out details such as decorations or indentions in the pieces.

2.      Discuss pinch pots and coil pots.  Using clay, model the process in making each type of pot.

3.     Give each student a lump of clay.   Allow them to experiment making pots out of clay.  The only rule is the following:  The pot must be able to hold water.  Remind the students that they can use objects in their environment to made decortations/indentions on their pottery.
