Pottery Puzzle

1.      The teacher will run off a picture of a piece of pottery on various colors of construction paper.  The picture of the pottery should be divided into pieces like a puzzle.  The teacher will cut the pottery apart.  You will end up with many pieces of colored paper which when put together will make the pottery.

2.      Take the pieces outside or in a large area where students can move around.  Each student will choose a piece from the colored pieces.  Then they will sort themselves according to the color of paper they have.  Next they will work together to put the pottery puzzle together.

3.      Repeat as many times as you would like.

4.      Allow the children to discuss how these pieces they have are similar to the pieces that archaeologists find.

5.      A possible follow-up activity could be to give each student an individual copy of the  puzzle and they could cut it apart and put it together by gluing on another piece of paper.
