Showcase Showdown

As the district – and, some say, state – front-runner for this years’ “Tessie” (Technology School of the Year) Award, Poplar Hill School readies for the annual TSY Showcase. School, community, and business leaders from across the state will descend on their town in four weeks -- and all eyes will be on the Keever County host school. Being the “home town” school this year adds a little pressure – and sparks renewed interest in the school from some local residents.

Poplar Hill Instructional Technologist Pat Reineke is ready – sort of. The Keever County Virtual Mentoring project has been the talk of the district since being mentioned in the state’s annual technology report. The attention has been rewarding – but the expectations worry Pat. With the partnership’s infrastructure precarious at best, Pat wonders how to keep it all together – at least, long enough to survive the showcase.

Luckily, with teachers like Ruth Todd and Chris Pacey, it is never as difficult as it seems. A unique mixture of old-timer wisdom and newcomer enthusiasm, these two middle school teachers are an inseparable team. They even share a student-teacher, Ashley Reese – an energetic and idealistic teacher-to-be with a knack for “the screen,” as they call it. The “VM 3,” as Pat calls them, have provided incalculable support and shown great patience throughout the year.

With less than two weeks to go, however, that support is shaken – and patience is tested – as one middle-schooler’s challenge of school policy calls forth a community maelstrom.
