Section 1

Identifying Inorganic Acids, Bases and Salts

Using pH to identify acids, bases and salts.

Materials needed

pH paper

pH meter

Test tubes

Test tube racks

Beral pipettes

Solutions:

1. KCl 4. HCl 7. NaOH
2. KOH 5. H2SO4 8. HNO3
3. NaCl 6. CuSO4 9. NH4OH

Procedure:

1. Label a test tube for each of the 9 sample solutions. Place in the test tube rack.

2. Obtain a 5ml sample of KCl and put it in the appropriate test tube.

3. Carefully dip a piece of pH paper in the KCl and note any color change. Record your observations.

4. Compare the color of the pH paper to the standard provided on the back of the pH paper container. Record the pH of the solution.

5. If there is a pH meter available, follow the teacher’s directions for its use. Record the pH measured by the pH meter.

6. Repeat steps 1-5 for each of the remaining 8 solutions. Be sure to record your data in the data table.
