Evaluation:

Evaluation will be based on the successful completion of the following activities.

Participate in class discussion and activities:

Discussions and activities include, but are not limited to, participation on the Discussion Board for this class, reading various resources on telecommunications/social networking technologies and their uses in learning settings, and reacting to what others have posted in any of the topics that appear in the discussion area.

Group Structures for the Class

There should be no more than four members of any group.

1.       One group will address the readings on issues, and jointly explore networking basics. This group will be cross-cohort and assigned by the instructor.

2.       The second group will explore telecommunications and social networking tools together, and will complete the final project for the class.

Projects and Activities:

Each student will participate in the completion of several activities and two projects.

Activity 1:  Exploration of Networking Basics (Assigned Groups)

In this activity, groups will explore and contribute resources related to the basic functionality and maintenance of networks. The Discussion Board will be used for this endeavor.

Activity 2:  Readings on Issues in Telecommunications and Social Networking (Assigned Groups)

Groups will read at least three articles related to various issues: online identity and culture, online safety, and legal issues, and discuss their findings and those of others on the discussion board.

Activity 3:  Exploration of Telecommunications and Social Networking Tools (Self-Selected Groups)

These groups will explore different types of tools for these purposes, and discuss their instruction implications and uses. Each group will find and discuss at least one additional example of each type of  tool on the Discussion Board.

Project 1: Planning for Personal Learning Network (Individuals or Self-Selected Groups)

Each individual will present a plan, in the format of your choice, for development of a PLN. A model for this may be found in Teleplace, but presentation is up to each person.

Project 2: Final Project: Planning for Implementation of Telecommunications/Social Networking Instructional Activity (Self-Selected Groups)

This project will be a culmination of your activities in this course. You will produce an instructional unit built around one or more telecommunications or social networking technology.

Your project will include a consideration of elements needed to implementation of your activities.  This should include:

1.       A consideration of technical requirements. Are there things which would need to be changed/upgraded in order for your project to take place?

2.       A consideration of issues surrounding the use of these technologies in your context. Are there questions of safety or identity? Could there be potential legal issues perceived by others in your district?  Is there a policy preventing such an implementation?  How will you address these issues?

Projects will be posted in a Teleplace Poster Forum, and individuals and/or groups will be expected to provide feedback on at least three of the posted products.

There is a short reflection due at the end of this course. This may be presented in any format you deem appropriate.
