Section 1 p. 1-20

1. What kind of town is North Brookfield?

It is a small town, with little action. The train station is small and seems to be deserted. There is nothing much happening in Brookfield, except for a boy who does not deliver the mail.

2. Emily Upham is stranded at the train station, what do you think she will do or what will happen to her (p. 17)?

I think that Emily Upham will be picked up by someone pretending to be her uncle. She will be kidnapped.

3. The postman, a banker, and the reverend are hunting down Seth. What does he do to get away from them (p. 12-13)?

He hides in the closet and pulls the boards off the back wall to make a hole. He climbs out of the hole and then runs away. First, he plans to go to his hideout, and then he sees the train pull in. But, he misses the train.

4. What do you think Seth Marple will do to stay out of trouble?

He will hideout in his special place in the woods, until he thinks that it is safe for him to go back home.

5. Why doesn’t Emily Upham want to stay with Polly (p. 4)?

Emily says that she does not want to stay in Polly’s house because she is supposed to stay with her Uncle, but I think that it is really because she thinks that Polly’s house is not good enough.
