Emily Upham’s father has lost all his money and
left his family to regain his fortune. He said that he would not return until
he had money. Emily’s mother falls ill and goes to her sister’s house to be
taken care of. Emily is sent to North Brookfield to stay
with her Uncle until her father returns home. Emily is left alone at the train
station. Seth Marple was hired to deliver mail, but he never delivered any of
it. Now, he is in trouble with banker Upham, the reverend, and the postmaster.
He runs away from the men and plans to go to his hideout in the woods. A train
is going through town, as Seth is running away, so the men think that Seth
boarded the train and is gone forever.
