Section 1 p. 1-20

Emily Upham’s father has lost all his money and left his family to regain his fortune. He said that he would not return until he had money. Emily’s mother falls ill and goes to her sister’s house to be taken care of. Emily is sent to North Brookfield to stay with her Uncle until her father returns home. Emily is left alone at the train station. Seth Marple was hired to deliver mail, but he never delivered any of it. Now, he is in trouble with banker Upham, the reverend, and the postmaster.
