This is a foreshadowing passage because it gives us a hint of what is to come in the book.

I think the book is going to tell the events of what happened that summer, the parts that her dad didn't splice into the film.

What does this passage add to the story?

It makes us want to read it to find out what happened that was too bad to put into the film.

First and last two words of passage:  "It may...am responsible."

This is a descriptive passage because it is describing Mr. Penny and his room.

Why does Mr. Penny have so many clocks in his room?

Because he was a clock repairman before he retired.

Why did the author include this passage in the story?

The author includes this to describe one of the residence at the boardinghouse and where we would know something about the guests.

 

p. 13 - 14  last paragraph

First and last two words of passage:  "Our house...was born."

This is a descriptive passage because it is describing their house, how they got it, and compares it to the other houses in the neighborhood.

Describe the house before the parents bought it.

It was a "ramshackle mess" ready for demolition.  It is a big house that was falling apart because nobody took care of it.
