Section 1, pgs 1-23

Based on what we've read so far, what role could Jacob end up playing in Katy's life?  How could this happen?

Jacob could end up becoming friends with Katy.  This could happen if they met somewhere, or if Katy ever goes to the Stoltz farm.

Why do you think the author chose to include references to the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, WWI, and the San Francisco earthquake? (end of pg 3, pg 4)

The author included these references provide historical background and to show the reasons why Katy wanted to be a doctor.  The references help frame the setting and time period of the story.

Look at the words "touched in the head'" on pg 17.  What could this phrase mean in reference to Jacob?

It could mean that there's something wrong mentally with Jacob.  Jacob could be "the silent boy" that the book is named after.  "The silent boy" could mean that Jacob doesn't speak.

Who's point of view is the story told from, and how can you tell? (pgs 3, 5, etc)

The story is told from Katy Thatcher's point of view, as an old woman looking back on her life.  You can tell this because she introduces herself as the narrator in the prologue.

How is the Thatcher home different from the Stoltz farm? (middle of pg 18)  Would having comforts really make you happier?  Why or why not?

The Thatcher home is bigger, with indoor plumbing.  The Stoltz farm is small and has dark rooms.  Having comforts doesn't seem to make anyone happier, because Peggy seemed to live a happy life without them before she came to the Thatcher home.
