lanky (pg 25, last paragraph)
The description of Jacob's physical appearance shows that he is tall and thin. His overalls were getting too short, and the paragraph said he was tall for his age.
perceptive (bottom of pg 26, end of pg 27)
Jacob, though unable to speak, still demonstrates that he's aware of the world around him through imitating the sounds that he hears.
daring (pg 51, last paragraph)
Jacob though nothing of going to Dr. Thatcher's stable to spend time with the horses. Most people wouldn't do so without permission, but Jacob probably didn't think it was wrong to.
Character Goal:
Jacob's goal is to spend time with the animals and to be left to do what he pleases.
Problem:
Jacob's problem is that he can't always communicate his wants and desires.
Solution or Possible Solution
A possible solution is for Jacob to rely on Katy to relay his messages for him. Another possibility is for Jacob to find other ways to communicate, such as sign language.
