Passage 1:

Pick out the passage you would like to share with your group and write down the page 52 and paragraph 1 and 2 numbers.

Write down the first two words snow and when and the last two words have and been of your passage.

This passage is a descriptive type of passage because it describes what the snow is like and helps describe the setting.

Question: What kind of images come to mind when you read this sentence: "Ghost shapes appear where bushes have been."?

Answer: A sheet covering boxes in the attic, "real" ghosts, everything covered in white.

Answer one of these questions in a complete sentence: Why did the author include this passage in the story?  What does this passage add to the story?

This passage adds imagery and a sense of setting to the story because of the way it conveys the winter day.

Passage 2:

Pick out the passage you would like to share with your group and write down the page 56 and paragraph 2 numbers.

Write down the first two words bells and not and the last two words the and walks of your passage.

This passage is a historical type of passage because it talks about how to clear snow in the early 20th century.

Think of a good thinking question about the passage.  Write it down along with the answer to this question.

Question: How do the rollers pulled by the horses do a similar and different job compared to our own snow plows?

Answer: Both are used to control the amount of snow on the road and both are used to promote safe travel.  The rollers compact the snow, while the plows clear the snow off of the road.

Answer one of these questions in a complete sentence: Why did the author include this passage in the story?  What does this passage add to the story?

This passage adds historical background knowledge as well as reminds the reader of the setting of the book.

Passage 3:

Pick out the passage you would like to share with your group and write down the page 72 and 73 and paragraph 4 of pg 72 to par 5 of pg 73 numbers.

Write down the first two words it's and bad and the last two words alone and together of your passage.

This passage is an amusing type of passage because it shows the misconceptions people had concerning birth marks and why they appear.

Think of a good thinking question about the passage.  Write it down along with the answer to this question.

Question: What other misconceptions can you think of that people use to explain events?

Answer: The full moon causes people to act strangely, frogs cause warts, etc.

Answer one of these questions in a complete sentence: Why did the author include this passage in the story?  What does this passage add to the story?

The author included this passage in the story to lead up to the discussion between Peggy and Katy about Jacob being "touched" in the head.
