Dear Mr. Henshaw
Character Sketcher-Leigh Botts
Character Traits
(humorous) p. 1 par. 1
In this passage, Leigh writes a brief letter to Mr. Henshaw. In his letter he tells Mr. Henshaw that he and his class "licked" his book about the dog. This shows a more humorous side of Leigh Botts.
2. (driven) p. 4 par. 2
In this passage, Leigh writes a letter to Mr. Henshaw where he encloses a picture in his letter. Leigh tells Mr. Henshaw that he is a fan of his writing and that he wants to be a famous author when he grows up. This shows that Leigh is driven to become somebody one day.
3. (frustrated) p. 27 par. 2
In this passage, Leigh is writing Mr. Henshaw in a response to all of Mr. Henshaw's questions. Leigh is responding to the question: "What bothers you?" Leigh responds that there are many things, such as the fact that his lunch gets stolen out of his lunch. Leigh is obviously frustrated with all that he is going through with his lunch being stolen everyday.
Character's Goal:
Leigh's goal is to become a famous writer one day, just like Mr. Henshaw. This is why he is practicing his writing through a journal, and also writing letters to Mr. Henshaw.
Character's Problem:
Leigh's problem is that part of his lunch is being stolen everyday, and he is the new kid in school with very little friends.
Solution or Possible Solution:
Leigh could put his lunch in his desk every morning instead of back behind the partition, or he could tell his teacher his problem and see if he could put his lunch somewhere else. Leigh could also try to invite someone over to play in the afternoon instead of just being quiet and all by himself. This would help his lunch to not be stolen, and for him to make some new friends in his new school.
