    "I'll be back before dawn," said Ralph staunchly.  "I must go.  Don't try to stop me."

    This word tells how Ralph said this.  It adds emphasis. 

    Definition: Firm and steadfast, having a strong constitution.

 

    Quavered pg. 121, par. 5

    "But Ralph," quavered Aunt Sissy.  "Remember your father.  You can't carry an aspirin in your cheek pouches.  It would poison you."

    This word describes how Aunt Sissy said this.

    Definition: To quiver as from weakness; tremble.  To speak in a quivering voice.

 

    Steadfast pg. 121, par. 6

    "Ralph was outwardly steadfast in his determination."

    Describes how strongly he felt about what he was going to do.

    Definition: Fixed or unchanging.  Steady.  Firmly loyal or constant.  Unswerving.

 

    Nuisance pg. 139, par. top of page

    ""You are a nuisance, that's what you are.  A four-footed, hair covered nuisance."

    It is the dog in room 211 yelling at Ralph.  It shows his annoyance with Ralph.

    Definition: One that is incontinent, annoying, or vexatious; a bother.
