Character Sketcher

Your job as Character Sketcher is to identify a character’s actions (traits) and explain or prove these traits, identify the character’s goal (which is what the character wants to do or accomplish), identify the problem and solution in the reading, and complete a sketch or illustration of the character.

You need to be aware that the character traits you will choose will be implied character traits. In other words, they are not directly stated in the passage. You really want to use descriptive words for your character traits. You do not want to use words like good, bad, nice, and mean.

Sometimes the solution to your character’s problem will not be in the section of the book that you are reading. In this case, you will need to come up with a possible solution for your character’s problem.

When you begin sketching or illustrating your character, try to use any physical descriptions from the text to help you. Your paper should look like this:

Character Traits (3)

1. Intuitive  p. 10 par. 4

Cam hasn't seen anything happen that would indicate the bike would be stolen, but she is thinking on her toes, and assumes that since the bike isn't locked up that it might be stolen. So since she knows that it is unusal for a bike to not be locked, she takes a picture of the bike just in case. This shows that she is intuitive.

2. Straight-forward p. 15 par. 1

Cam thinks that the girl who rode out on the bicycle stole it, so she starts running after the girl on the bike. She doesn't play games, and she isn't afraid to approach anyone. She goes after her leads and doesn't hesitate. This shows that she is straight-forward.

3.  Intellectual p. 20 par. 2

Cam is trying to guess the number of buttons in a jar, and in order to do this, she is counting the buttons in her head. She knows that there are buttons that she can not see, but also knows that by counting all the buttons she can see, she will be able to make a more educated guess. This shows that she is intellectual.

Character Goal:

Cam’s goal is to keep an eye on everything happening at the carnival.

Problem : Cam’s problem is trying to figure out why the Dime Toss is so hard to win. She is also trying to figure out why some people are able to win, while others come really close and do not win.

Solution or Possible Solution: The game might be rigged.
