Passage 1

This boy has just won the dime toss. Do you think he is lucky, or that there is some other reason that he has won the impossible game? Why
or why not?

I think the boy is just lucky. He is the same curly haired boy mentioned in the beginning of the book, but I think he just got lucky in the dime toss.

5. Answer one of these questions in a complete sentence. Why did the author include this passage in the story? What does this passage add to
the story?

This passage adds color to the story. It gives you visual images which add to the story. If the author had just said a boy won a prize at the
Dime Toss, we would be bored. But the author goes into detail about the boy, which makes you want to keep reading.
 

Passage 2

1. Pick out the passage you would like to share with your group and write down the page 7 and paragraph 3 number.

2. Write down the first two words Many of and the last two words was stolen of your passage.

3. This passage is a foreshadowing passage because it tells you that something happened last year at the carnival, and the teacher wants to make sure nothing happens this year. This makes you being to think about what might possibly happen. Will another bike get stolen, will a kid get lost, or will something else happen?

4. Think of a good thinking question about the passage. Write it down along with the answer to the question.

Predict what you think might happen this year at the carnival that Ms. Benson is trying to prevent.

I think someone might try to cheat in a game.

5. Answer one of these questions in a complete sentence. Why did the author include this passage in the story? What does this passage add to
the story?

 

This passage provides foreshadowing. The author included this because it gives the story a plot, and it is something that grabs your
attention, and makes you want to read to find out what is going to happen. It also makes me wonder why Ms. Benson asked Cam to watch over the carnival instead of parents or other teachers. She knows Cam has a photographic memory, and maybe she thinks it will come in handy later on in the day.
 

Passage 3

2. Write down the first two words You shouldn't and the last two words steal it of your passage.

3. This passage is a informative passage becauseit tells kids safety rules on why you shouldn't wear earphones while riding your bicycle. Some kids might not know this, so I think it is good the author found a way to put this into the passage.

4. Think of a good thinking question about the passage. Write it down along with the answer to the question.What are some other bicycle safety rules that everyone should know?

Wear a helmet, wear something reflective if riding at night, use hand signals when turning

5. Answer one of these questions in a complete sentence. Why did the author include this passage in the story? What does this passage add to
the story?
This passage was included to inform kids of things they should know before riding a bicycle. The author included it on a side note to try and
