Character Sketcher

Your job as Character Sketcher is to identify a character’s actions (traits) and explain or prove these traits, identify the character’s goal (which is what the character wants to do or accomplish), identify the problem and solution in the reading, and complete a sketch or illustration of the character.

You need to be aware that the character traits you will choose will be implied character traits.  In other words, they are not directly stated in the passage.  You really want to use descriptive words for your character traits.  You do not want to use words like good, bad, nice, and mean.

Sometimes the solution to your character’s problem will not be in the section of the book that you are reading.  In this case, you will need to come up with a possible solution for your character’s problem.

When you begin sketching or illustrating your character, try to use any physical descriptions from the text to help you.  Your paper should look like this:

Character Traits (3)

  1. Unhappy p. 3 par. 3

Josh was unhappy because he was in a new state and didn’t know anyone but he also had a bully after him.  Wes had put snow down Josh’s jacket on the first day of school making things start off bad for him.  Josh didn’t like the people that he had met in his town nor did he like the cold weather.

  1. Determined p. 20 par. 6

Josh knew that Manch could talk and that he could understand him and he was determined to get Manch to talk to him again.

  1. Scared p. 30 par. 1

Josh was scared because he knew Wes and his buddies were coming after him and were going to try to hurt him.  Josh had to ask Manch and his friends for help so he wouldn’t get hurt too badly.

Character’s Goal:  Josh’s goal is to stay away from Wes and to get Manch to talk to him.

Problem:  Josh’s problem is that Wes lives only down the street and he has to face him everyday especially when they have to wait on the bus together.  His other problem is Manch is not paying Josh any attention because he is probably mad at him for listening to the dogs talk and finding out their secret.

Solution or Possible Solution:  A possible solution would be for Josh to stay away from Wes and tell his mom what is happening, hoping that she will take him to class or he could just try to be Wes’ friend.  A solution for Josh to get Manch to talk to him is just wait out time and if Manch needs him he will come to him.
