  1. This passage is a funny passage because I can see a mental picture of someone with boots on up to their belly button and trying to walk and that makes me laugh.  It’s descriptive too because it tells what the boots look like, being leather, with a rubber sole, and tall.
  2. Think of a good thinking question about the passage.  Write it down along with the answer to this question.

Why do you think he disliked the boots so much?  Do you think Josh disliked something else more and took out his frustrations on the boots?  Why?

I think that Josh disliked being in a new town with new people and he wasn’t very happy to have Greg as his stepfather.  His stepfather bought the boots for him since he was moving and it was something Josh just wasn’t used to so he was having a hard time adjusting.

  1. Answer one of these questions in a complete sentence(s):  Why did the author include this passage in the story?  What    does this passage add to the story?

The struggle with the boots may mean there is a bigger struggle with Greg later in the story or that Josh has a bigger struggle with other people like Wes.  We know that Josh isn’t happy now so things may only get worse.

  6. I think the author included this in the story because bullies can be real mean and scary.  We want to stay away from them but sometimes they just want leave people alone.

  4. This is a simile because it is comparing one thing to another by using as.  The passage was comparing how cold it was to a dog’s nose.
  5. Why do you think there was a comparison to a dog’s nose?  I think there was a comparison to a dog’s nose because the story deals a lot with dogs like Manch and his friends.
  6. I think the author used this passage to put in perspective how cold it is where they live now.  It also deals with dogs in a sense and I think the author is just setting a scene or dogs and cold.

  2. He might    &    winter long
