Word Wizard

 

1.   Write down the word Courageously, the p. 4 and par. 2.

  1. Copy the sentence from the book in which the word appears.  Courageously he pushed forward, following the tangled pattern of prints off the road through a small woods.
  2. Re-read the sentence in which the word appears.  Think about the word, the sentence, and the story.  Write down what part of speech you think the word is adverb.  Now, write down what you think the word means very brave and not scared.
  3. Look up the word in the dictionary.  Using the dictionary definition and everything you know about the word, write your definition of the word.  To do something without having fear.
  4. Write down an explanation telling how this word adds meaning to the story.  Think about the characters, plot, setting, theme, etc.  The word courageously adds meaning to the story because Josh has to deal with a lot of scary things and he starts off courageous and goes to find Manch without being scared.  This may mean he does everything courageously.

 

  1. Wandered p. 1 par. 1
  2. Josh had wandered up the road himself last week before the snow came.
  3. Verb.  To go around.
  4. To roam around
  5. The word wandered adds meaning to the story because Josh and Manch wandered all the time.  Josh always wandered looking for Manch and Manch always wandered with his friends.  Neither one seemed to be at the house much.

 

  1. Dazzling p. 7 par. 2
  2. The woods ended abruptly in an expanse of dazzling whiteness.
  3. adjective.  Something very amazing looking
  4. A brilliant shine or bright light making vision unclear
  5. The word dazzling adds meaning to the story because even though Josh sees this one dazzling thing he doesn’t seem to think much else is great.  He seems to like what he sees here but for the rest of this section he is scared and unhappy it seems.

 

  1. Dallying p. 19 par. 2
  2. “Stop your dallying and come down here this minute!”
  3. Intransitive verb.  Playing around and taking your time
  4.  To act playfully not doing what you need to be doing
  5. The word dallying adds meaning to the story because Josh doesn’t get to dally much because he is always trying to keep an eye on Manch or Wes or doing something for his mom and Greg.  He does what he needs to do usually and in some ways tries to stay out of trouble.  If he dallies outside of the house he may get caught by Wes.
