Wishes, Kisses, and Pigs
Aquamarine

Launch Activity:

This literature circle unit introduces the fantasy genre on the fourth grade reading level. As young readers, students may not be totally familiar with this particular genre.  In order to introduce this unit, teachers may want to lead a class discussion on the fantasy genre, what it is, what makes it different that fiction, etc.  As a large group, the class will brainstorm various fantasy characters, plots, and settings that could be found in this type of literature.  Ideas can be written on the board or on poster board for the entire class to see. After brainstorming, the students will be able to create their own fantasy short story using the thoughts and ideas from the collection, including illustrations.  The story does not have to be too intense, just a few paragraphs to help students begin to understand this particular genre.  The short stories and illustrations can be displayed on a bulletin board that focuses on fantasy literature.
