Nettie’s Trip South
Section 7; p.1- 27
(2nd- 3rd grade
plan)
Summary
This
is the story of a little girl named Nettie who took a trip with her family to
the south. She was very excited when she
found out that she had the chance to make the trip. She had never seen any slaves before. And her family thought that they should make
the trip before the war began. Nettie
had been told that slaves or black people were only three fifths of a
person. Therefore, when she was in the
south, she constantly found herself searching for the missing pieces of the
slaves. However, she never found
anything. She also goes to a slave
auction with her brother who is writing an article about it. She witnesses families being separated and
becomes very ill. Nettie and her family
returned home almost immediately. She
began to realize that it was only the color of their skin that made people
treat them in such a manner. She thinks
about how people would treat her differently if she were only in black
skin. The entire book is told through a
letter that Nettie is writing to her friend Addie.
