Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt
Summary
This is the story
of a little girl named Clara. She was
sent from the plantation that she was on, to live at another plantation because
they needed more help in the field. Clara
could not handle the bodily demands of the field. So, her Aunt taught her how to sew. She became very good at it and eventually was
moved into the Big House to sew full time.
The sewing room was just next to the kitchen and there were a lot of people
in and out of there. She often found
herself listening so hard to the conversations that she thought her ears were
growing. With all of this listening, she
learned about runaways, the Underground Railroad and maps. She began to talk with others, some who had
attempted to runaway and some who had just heard things about the area, and
began to sew a map. This map would
eventually be called the Freedom Quilt.
One day, when the quilt was all finished Clara and her friend Jack
decided to escape. They made it to the
next plantation and found Clara mother and sister. They ran away with Clara and Jack. They made it to the
