Sweet Clara and the Freedom Quilt

Summary

This is the story of a little girl named Clara.  She was sent from the plantation that she was on, to live at another plantation because they needed more help in the field.  Clara could not handle the bodily demands of the field.  So, her Aunt taught her how to sew.  She became very good at it and eventually was moved into the Big House to sew full time.  The sewing room was just next to the kitchen and there were a lot of people in and out of there.  She often found herself listening so hard to the conversations that she thought her ears were growing.  With all of this listening, she learned about runaways, the Underground Railroad and maps.  She began to talk with others, some who had attempted to runaway and some who had just heard things about the area, and began to sew a map.  This map would eventually be called the Freedom Quilt.  One day, when the quilt was all finished Clara and her friend Jack decided to escape.  They made it to the next plantation and found Clara mother and sister.  They ran away with Clara and Jack.  They made it to the Ohio River and from there they acquired help from the Underground Railroad.  Clara’s quilt is still on the plantation helping people escape.
