  1. In this part of the story Emily and her brother are sold from their mother.  They are separated from their mother.  She felt fear about being away from her mother.  If I was in this situation I would be very nervous.  I would be lost without a parental figure in my life.  I would be scared because I would not have anyone to comfort me.  There is really nothing I can do to make this situation the same.  But I would do my best to be strong and have faith, that one day I might be back with my family.  I would be extremely afraid, but I would have to be strong to get through it.

  2.     The answer is C because that is what the Misses told her to do. She had to go down to the slave   quarters for the rest of the day. When she went down there she helped Aunt Jean with the sick girl.

  1. Isaiah got whipped because he stole a chicken from the chicken coup.  He stole this chicken so that the sick girl would have some nutrition.  The slaves did not have good food to eat. In order for the girl to get better she had to have better nutrition.  Isaiah stole the chicken so the girl would get better.

  1. When the slaves ran away they followed the North Star.  This star would guide the slaves up north.  The North Star was part of the Big Dipper.  They called this the wooden spoon.  Many slaves had a saying to follow the Drinking Gourd to freedom.  They would have to keep the North Star over his head.  This would keep the runaway slaves on course to the north to freedom.

  1. The stable on the plantation was on fire.  This is where all the horses and ponies were stored.  I think that Moses, or Harriet Tubman started the fire. I do not believe the slaves on the plantation would have done this.  I think they were not bold enough to carry out this activity.  The only person around to carry out this was Harriet Tubman.  They even say in the story that they think it was Moses.  I think Harriet did this to show the slaves that they had power.  A couple of days after the fire some of the slaves were going to run away.  I think this was kind of a pep rally for the slaves.  The fire gave them hope, that there was light in front of them up north.
