Answers
1. Texas seceded from the union in February of 1861. With Texas's geographic location, it had close ties to the southern states slave-holding states. These ties have been strengthen by association. Texas was in a geographic location by it's self. But Texas sided with the confederacy. After slave-holding states around Texas had fallen, they had to give in to the North. They were isolated from the other slave states, and were on their own. This eventually made them turn to the Union.
2. This day is when the Battle of Fort Sumter took place. On April 12, Confederate batteries opened fire on the fort, which was unable to reply effectively. At 2:30 pm, April 13, Major Anderson surrendered Fort Sumter, evacuating the garrison on the following day. This fight marks the first battle of the Civil War. The Confederate took the fort from the Union soldiers.
3. The Monitor and Merrimac were ships in the Civil War. These two ships are the first iron-clad ships to do battle. Neither one of the ships sunk the other. The battle was a draw because they could not sink each other.
4. This battle proved to be the bloodiest day of the war; 2,108 Union soldiers were killed and 9,549 wounded -- 2,700 Confederates were killed and 9,029 wounded. The battle had no clear winner, but because General Lee withdrew to Virginia, McClellan was considered the victor.
5. The two generals are Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant. These two generals were at Appomattox Court House. They signed the April 9, 1865 they signed the surrender papers.
