To introduce this unit start by reading aloud the book, The Pain and the Great One, by Judy Blume.  This is a wonderful book to introduce the unit because it provides a perfect example of a sibling relationship like the students will be reading in the Fudge books.   Once you are done reading the book have the students tell what they thought about the brother and sister’s relationship.  You could also get the students to talk about their own sibling relationships.

To get the students involved you could have the students to write another section to the book and make an ending.  The students could work in pairs or as a whole group.  Get the students to discuss the reasons why they think the ending would end the way they write it.

For an additional activity you could have the students do a role-playing activity where they act out the ending they wrote for the book.  Assign students roles and let the students dress up and have a good time with this.
