“His specs were at the end of his nose and his new necktie was askew, and he was very nearly winded.”

Definition- to be crooked or off center

Importance of word in story

I think that this word would describe Granddad. He seems like he would often be askew or crooked. He does not seem to be the type of person who would care if his necktie was straight and neat. This also describes his personality. Granddad is a little different than other people. He seems to not live life in a straight line, he needs a little excitement and off center life and adventures.
