Character Sketcher for Molly’s Pilgrim

by Barbara Cohen

Illustrated by Michael J. Deraney

Character Traits for Molly:

1.     excluded (page 3, paragraph 2)

Molly felt excluded from the group when Elizabeth brought her friends a peppermint stick but did not bring her one.  She knew it was because she was different and they did not like people who were different.

2.     mortified (page10, paragraph 3)

Molly was mortified at the thought of her mother coming to her school.  That would just make things harder for her if the other children saw her mom and heard her talk.  That would surely make the teasing and harassment worse than it already was.  After all she just wanted to fit in and make friends; somehow.

3.     fuming (page 19)

Molly was fuming at Elizabeth and her follower Hilda for always bugging her and because they would not leave her alone about her Pilgrim doll.  She knew they would make fun of it she was not even sure if it was the right idea of a Pilgrim or not.  She knew her doll was definitely did not look likes the ones she had studied yesterday in class.  Elizabeth and Hilda kept on aggravating her until she finally showed them and Molly got exactly what she thought she would.  Earsplitting laughter came from the girls.  Molly felt her face getting hotter and the steam starting to simmer inside her when she was saved by the school bell.

Character Goal:

Molly’s goal is to be accepted by the others at her school in Winter Hill.  She wanted friends that she could play with and talk to.

Problem:

Molly’s problem is that she is different than everyone else in the small town of Winter Hill.  Her family is from Russia and they are Jewish.  No one knows anything about her and they are probably scared of the unknown, so they express themselves by making fun of her differences.  Molly is in a new country and is learning new customs, languages, holidays, and trying to learn to make new friends with people who are not very polite to her at all.

Solution or Possible Solution:

The ending of this book was a good beginning for a friendship.  It started because Miss Stickley, the teacher, knew how the first pilgrims got the idea for the first Thanksgiving.  Then she proceeded to place Molly’s doll on her desk for everyone to see that pilgrims are still fleeing to America everyday.  Emma, who sat beside Molly, told her what a beautiful doll she had made.  Molly has a new friend, Emma.
