Hallie's Horrible Handwriting: pages 7-27
Job #1
For this section of the book, discussion director's job will be to develop 2 thinking questions. These questions could include the 5 W's (Who, What, When, Where, and Why). Also, the student can come up with questions asking how.
For Example:
Why does Hallie get so frustrated?
Who comforts Hallie when she is upset?
Job #2
**Passage Picker**
This student's job will be to pick out an important passage from this section of the book. The student will express his or her feelings to the group about why this section is important or significant to the story. This will lead discussions about important morals, themes, concepts, etc. in the story.
Job #3
**Word Wizard**
This student will choose 2 words from the following choices and make word wizard cards for each word.
thrilled
slammed
delighted
squashed
wadded
ruined
Vocabulary Activities:
1. Word Wizard Card: For each word, the "Word Wizard" will reread the sentence where the word is used in the book. Then he/she will make a word wizard card. The word wizard card will have the page number, a short (kid-friendly) definition, and one synonym. The Word Wizard will also include a picture representing the word on the word wizard card.
2. Next the student will write a sentence using each vocabulary word.
Job #4
This student will make a character sketcher for Hallie. The character sketcher will pick out 2 character traits that describe Hallie and draw a picture of her.
Job #5
**Investigator**
In this section of the book Miss Sparks begins a pupa project. The children in Miss Sparks class have to write in their journal about a pupa. The investigator will search sites and books for facts about butterflies and their pupas. The child will collect data and record information in their own journal. They will come back to the group and share their findings. Here are some resources they may want to use:
