Materials:
• The Chronicles of Narnia
• Paper
• Markers/Crayons
Goals:
• The students will learn the
attributes of a map
• The students will learn
proper map making and reading techniques
• The students learn how to
create a map from descriptions of a place given in text
Introduction:
I will teach my students
about maps. I will show them how maps are read, how directions are recorded
on maps and how maps are made. I will make sure that my students understand
that a map is a scaled down model of the actual thing and I will show my
students that a map is a ‘birds eye view” of the place.
Lesson:
I will begin reading to my class The Magician’s Nephew. When we get to parts that describe the lay out of Narnia, I will have the students create maps that correlate with the information giving in the book. Greater details are giving in different sections of the book, so maps will become more detailed throughout the reading of the book. This lesson can be used in all seven of the Chronicles. Each book has places that are adequately described for the students to create maps that show the area.
Assessment:
I will check to see
that the maps my students create contain the attributes of a map. I will
make sure that the maps accurately portray the landscape that is described
in the novels.
