I choose this image from the book entitled, Many Thousand Gone, African-Americans from Slavery to Freedom, by Virginia Hamilton. I think this image symbolizes the struggle Nightjohn faced to ensure that future generations of African-Americans in this country would have the ability to read and write. This valiant, unselfish desire would only be satisfied at great personal pain. Without seeing a face, the image evokes the longing to be free of the injustice and inhumanity doled out by the white man.
