Summary:
In this section, Lucy, Tyler 2, and Sarny have finally arrived in
New Orleans. They have been
traveling with the woman they met earlier in their travels. Miss Laura has
persuaded Lucy and Sarny to become her employees, earning twenty dollars per
month, plus receiving free room and board. Sarny goes shopping at open-air
markets in New Orleans with Bartlett, and she is amazed
the amount of food that is available. The main event that occurs in this
section takes during a dinner party that Lucy and Sarny have been working to
prepare for. During the guest arrivals, a man walked in with two children.
Sarny is taking the guests’ coats and hats, when all of sudden she takes a
long, critical look at the children. They are her Tyler and Little Delie! The
man who entered the party with Sarny’s children is a bit angered and confused,
and Sarny openly tells Miss Laura, while the man could hear, that she would gut
him like a hog if he touches them again. Sarny describes how she now feels at
home living and working at Miss Laura’s home in New Orleans. At the conclusion
of this section, Sarny meets a kind man, Stanley, and they get married.
