When I was a Child

By Jennifer Aune

Children love to run and play

And climb trees.

They love to skip and dress-up

And color pictures.

They hate rules and broccoli

And taking baths.

They hate naps and long car rides

And having to sit in time-out.

Moms and dads always say they know best

But kids don’t think so.

When I was a child

I wanted to grow up.

I wanted to ride a bike and

Then drive a car.

I wanted to wear high heels

And make-up.

I wanted to go to kindergarten

And then to college far away.

I wanted to kiss boys

And then get married.

Instead of wanting to be a child

I wanted to be a mother.

I have a feeling that when

I am older and more wise,

I will want to be a child again.
