The Bear and the Kitten
One sunny afternoon a young
bear cub named Rexy was frolicking through the woods. This was routine for Rexy.
He looked forward to nothing more than his afternoon adventures in the woods. He
was the youngest in his family, and no one ever felt like playing with him
because he was young. Rexy didn't mind too much, because he had a vivid
imagination.
Today was going to be different
for Rexy; he just didn't know it yet... On his routine tromping through the
woods, he heard a noise ahead in the trees. He was startled at first, but then
became curious. He cautiously approached the area where he first heard the
noise. As he peeked through the trees he noticed a small animal, one much
smaller than him. His curiousity got the better of him and he pushed through the
trees to get a closer look.
As soon as he was out in the
clearing, he saw a kitten stuck in the highest bough of one of the trees. Rexy
approached the kitten and pondered whether or not to offer assistance. The
kitten appeared to be struggling, so Rexy, having a heart bigger than most,
decided to offer his hand to help get the kitten down. The kitten was startled
at Rexy's size, and stiffened quite noticibly.
Rexy picked up on this and
offered comforting words to the kitten. The two began to talk, and before long
were laughing. Rexy forgot all about the kitten being stuck in the tree. Finally
getting stiff from sitting in the tree for so long, the kitten tried to manuever
himself down the trunk of the enormous tree. Rexy remembered the kitten's plight
and offered his help. The kitten refused and said he was enjoying the view from
the treetops.
Rexy felt bad for not being able
to help, but did not wish to argue with the kitten. He offered one last time
because it was getting late and he had to be home in time for supper. The kitten
refused again. Rexy felt bad leaving the kitten in the trees, but knew there
wasn't anything he could do, so he started off towards home.
Not five minutes after Rexy left
did the kitten find himself wishing he had taken the help Rexy offered. There
was nothing he could do but sit and long for Rexy's return.
Moral: "He who is too proud to accept a helping hand will surely find himself in need."
