The Hungry Blue Bird

by Katie Wood

Once there was a blue bird named Jake. One day Jake was flying over a full vegetable garden when he noticed a plump juicy worm squirming near the tomatoes in the garden. The worm came out of the cool ground to get some warmth from the sun. The worm, while plump, was smaller than his friends. When Jake landed near the garden the worm noticed the hungry blue bird and began to get nervous. Jake approached the worm and said, “I have not had lunch yet,  and I am so hungry”. The worm responded, “I am not big enough to fill your belly, but if you come back in a week, I will be bigger and make more of a meal for you”. Jake thought for a minute and decided that a little meal now would be just fine because he was not sure he could find another meal later; he was hungry now. Jake told the worm: “A worm in hand is worth two in the ground.”
