The Not So Clever Fox
One sunny, summer day, Freddy Fox was headed down the winding dirt lane to the Rabbit Races. While strolling down the lane, Freddy came to Oscar Owl’s home. Oscar was on a limb in front of his house sweeping up the dirt when he noticed Freddy.
“Hello friend! Where are you going on such a beautiful day?” Oscar asked Freddy.
“Hello Oscar, I am off to win some goods at the Rabbit Races. You see, every summer the races come to town and I take my eggs and place a wager on who I think will win. Then, when my rabbit wins, I will be able to return home with a sack full of goods!” replied Freddy.
“Well, remember Mr. Fox, do not be so sure your rabbit will win and do not place all your goods on one rabbit, for it may loose,” stated Oscar.
“Oh, don’t worry I know what I am doing.” With that Freddy returned to his pleasant stroll down the lane toward the races.
That day at the race, Freddy placed all his eggs on rabbit number 10 and it lost. Freddy had to return home empty handed with not even one egg for dinner.
When he passed by Oscar’s house, Oscar was still outside, this time sitting in his rocker enjoying the breeze.
“Hello again Freddy,” Oscar hollered to Freddy. “How did the races go?”
With a sad look on his face Freddy replied, “I lost everything.”
“I told you before you went not to put all your eggs in one basket!” Stated Oscar.
Freddy shed a tear and returned to walking home. The entire way home he repeated to himself the lesson that he had learned, “Not to put all your eggs in one basket!”
