The Two Cat Swing

by J. L. Rogers

Once upon a time, there was a family of cats that lived on the edge of a big farm. The cat family consisted of Momma Cat, everyone called her “Momma”, and her two kittens, Gloves, he had white paws, and Mittens, and she had black paws. The family lived along side a number of animals and they got along with the other families very well. One of those animal families was the Moo Family. Gloves and Mittens loved to play with Baby Moo, the little cow. Everyday started the same way, Momma would wake-up first. Soon after waking up, Momma would ever so lightly wake-up her little kittens.

“Wake-up my little babies”, is what Momma would say.

As soon as the sleep was out of the little Cats’ eyes they were off. They had rested so hard during the night, that now they wanted to get out all their new energy. That led to Gloves and Mittens running as fast as they could to go and see Baby Moo. Once they found Baby, the first thing they did was to hang on Baby’s tail. Every morning Gloves and Mittens would go and hang on Baby’s tail. They would compete with each other to see who could swing the highest. Finally, Baby grew tired of the Cats hanging on his tail.

“It hurts when Gloves and Mittens hang on my tail. I think I will show them how it feels.”

The next morning Gloves and Mittens went running to find Baby. Once they found Baby, Gloves and Mittens jumped so high seemed to be able to fly with the blue birds over Baby's head. As they came down, both Gloves and Mittens grab poor Baby's tail and started to hang on his tail at the same time. After they got down, Baby proceeded to stand on Gloves and Mittens tails. The two Cats screamed and hollered in pain.

“That hurt, why did you do that Baby?,” asked Mittens.

Baby answered, “Well you do it to me every morning, I thought that is what you wanted your friend to do.”

The two Cats were very upset. “I can’t believe you. That was an awful thing to do,” Gloves said.

Gloves and Mittens ran off crying for their mommy. Once they found her she asked them what was wrong.

Gloves said, “Baby Moo stood on both our tails for no good reason.”

“Well that doesn’t sound like something Baby would do. What did you two do right before Baby stood on your tails?” asked Momma.
“We did what we do every morning. We found Baby and jumped as high as we could and hung on her tail,” said Mittens.

Momma was really upset now, “Well that explains it. Do the two of you want Baby to hang on your tails? Is that a nice thing to do?”

“No,” Gloves and Mittens answered together.

“Well if you want to be treated kindly, then you need to treat others kindly. You should treat other people the way the two of you expect to be treated. Do you understand?,” asked Momma.

            “Yes,” said the two kittens.

After that, the two kittens ran off again. They found Baby Moo over in the pasture, and he was crying. “What’s wrong Baby?,” asked Gloves.

Baby answered, “I am sorry. I didn’t mean to hurt the two of you. It is just my mom told me that you treat others the way you want to be treated. The two of you were hanging on my tail, so I thought you wanted me to pull or step on your tails.”

“No Baby, we are the ones that are sorry. We didn’t think about the fact that we were hurting you. We will be nicer now,” promised Mittens.

The next morning, the two kittens woke-up and ran to find their friend, Baby. When they found him, they jumped up on the Baby Moo’s back and gave their friend a great big hug.
