Here’s what you need to do:
You can find a list of these award-winning books at
http://www.ala.org click on awards and scholarships in the bar at the top of the page then click on book/media awards, which is along the side of the page then click on Newbery Medal. Finally, click on Newbery Medal and honor books, 1922-present
Repeat this process for each award.
PLEASE NOTE: There are often Internet resources for these books. You are welcome to explore those resources, and you may even decide to use some of the suggested activities, in addition to the activities YOU DEVELOP. However, you need to cite any sources for ideas that are not yours. The activities that you have experienced and will continue to experience with Peter and the Starcatchers are activities that you should consider using—if they are appropriate for the novel that you have chosen. Those activities are ones that you will know from your own experience. You should be able to describe and develop those well.
For example, one of the reasons that I might choose the book Bud, Not Buddy is that it provides a context for students to read and think about a time in our history known as The Great Depression, specifically related to the themes of family and relationships, hope, survival, and racism. This book also inspires a wonderful connection to learning about the music genre of Jazz. The companion nonfiction text is Kids During the Great Depression. This book is written on a 3rd grade reading level and provides most 5th grade students with opportunities to learn about the causes and effects of The Great Depression with a focus on children during this time in history.
