Text Box:            It’s a Place
Why am I keeping this notebook?
Because it’s a place where I can
Keep track of my life.
It’s a place where I can observe
closely
And where I can store little pieces of
strength.
It’s a place where I can keep the
elements of life
(lightning, fire, ice, time and space)
and writing
(poetry, words, eyes).
It’s a place where tales weave.
All in all
It’s a place for ME.

Text Box: What is a Writer’s Notebook?

A writer’s notebook is a place to express your ideas without the constraints of formal requirements. It is a place for your thoughts and feelings to be expressed without the fear that you will be judged or criticized.
You are to write daily about what is happening in your life. Remember to share your thoughts by using details. Think about the things you hear, feel. smell, taste and see each day.
Text Box: Example from Chrysanthemum by Kevin Henkes:
“her name must be everything she is,” said her mother. “Her name must be absolutely perfect,” said her father. And it was. Chrysanthemum. Her parents named her Chrysanthemum.

As you begin your journey in your writer’s notebook, take a minute and think about the name your parents gave you. Write about how you got your name. If you don’t know how you got your name, write about why you think your parents named you what they did. Tonight ask your parents how you got your name.
Text Box: I invite you today to take a journey with me into a place that many long to travel. This is a place where there is freedom to think and be whatever you like. This journey will last throughout the year. There will be days when the journey is difficult and you find your mind stuck. Don’t worry! I will be your guide. I will help you travel over the hurdles that might get in your way. I will help you climb mountains! Together we will take this journey into your writer’s notebook.
