My Writing Invitation
Teacher: Alicia Walker
Grade: Kindergarten
Time: 10:30 to 11:15
Introduction:
I explained to the students that I had a very special surprise. At the same time every day we would have a very exciting opportunity. To learn more about this opportunity I read Flip’s Fantastic Journal by Angelo DeCesare.
We learned several things from the book:
Guided Practice:
Next, I sat out a gift box for the students to open. One child came and lifted the lid. The students immediately said, “Our Own Journals!” My assistant remarked that they acted like it was Christmas. They were so excited!
Then, I told the students that I was going to hand them their own journal. They were told not to explore their journal until I said, “bananarama”. The students then explored their notebook. They commented that there were lots of pages. I then asked what they noticed about their journals. One of my students said it was plain. That was the answer I was looking for. I then asked the students to take their journals to their seat and write their name on the front of their journal. They left their journals at their seats.
Afterward, I returned to Flip’s Journal. We read the first page. Flip had written what he liked. I asked the students what they liked. Our first page was going to be like Flip’s page. I modeled writing for them on the board. The students helped me sound out “I like ice cream.”
Independent Practice:
The students returned to their seats to write their own sentence. They did great!
Closure:
We returned our journals to the gift box. I informed the students that tomorrow we would make a home for our journal. They are ready for Writer’s Workshop!
