Grade:  Readiness k-1

Period:  Reading

Lesson Introduction:

Students I am soooo…excited to give out new writing journals for the month of October.  Your new journals are like the purple ones where you learned to write your name.  You are ready to add sentences and drawings to October’s journal.  We will be using popcorn words (high frequency words) to write sentences about the fun things you see and do in the fall.  You might write a sentence about popcorn or about going to the fair.

     Here are some examples:

     I like to eat popcorn.

I like to go to the fair.

Mini-Lesson:

I held up popcorn words as we read The Popcorn Book by Tomie de Paola.

As you learn these six words (I, a, see, he, go, and to, velcroed to a tongue depressor) they will go in a popcorn word box of your very own. I demonstrated a sentence on the board using words from my word box. You will write sentences in your journal using popcorn words to help tell your story. You will keep your journal and popcorn word box together and write in it every day after story time.

While reading the book we looked for popcorn words. We also learned the letter Pp and the sound it makes.  As I read a high frequency word my voice raised as I held up the  popcorn word on a stick.

We discovered three interesting facts about popcorn when we read The Popcorn Book.

·          Popcorn was discovered by Indian people.

·          Popcorn is made from corn.  There are three types of corn.

·          There is field corn, sweet corn and popcorn.

Journaling:

For your first journal entry I’d like you to write about going to the fair. You can write about the animals you will see or the food you will eat.  Please use some of the popcorn words in your sentence. You may draw a picture to support your story. Sign your work and give to Ms. Ward or Ms. McRae so we can Ohhhhh and Ahhhhh over it.
