Section 1 Pages 1-32

The first newspaper by Benjamin Harris was published in the    United States on September 25, 1690.  The name of the paper was Public Occurrences which was immediately suppressed by the Governor and Council of the Massachusetts Bay Colony.  Gutenberg, a German inventor created a printing press that was vital in helping to establish the newspaper industry.  His  invention made it possible to produce multiple copies of print cheaply and quickly.  Today there are on average 2.2 readers per copy of daily newspapers in the United States.  On Sundays the average number of readers goes up to 2.3 readers.  Currently, there are about 1500 daily newspapers printed throughout the United States.
