Discussion Director
The job of discussion director is to ask the students in the group meaningful
thinking questions. The students need to write down the questions (between4-
10), the answers to the questions, and if possible, the page and paragraph
number where the answers can be found. The teacher will be responsible for
deciding the number of questions the students will ask. The teacher may want
to let the students choose some "on their own:" If this is the case, the
Discussion Director may look like this:
5 Questions
1 Prediction
1 Cause and Effect
2 Thinking
1 Problem/Solution
Read with students the book Pigs Might Fly by Dick King-Smith. After teacher
models specific skills, students will have a chance at trying to come up with
questions on their own.
Prediction: pg. 10 Will the Pigman let Daggie go and will Daggie
get to stay with his mother and family?
I predict that the Pigman will let Daggie go and Daggie will get to stay with his mother and family instead of being taken away.
Effect: pg. 12 Daggie gets to go back to his family and mother.
What Caused him to get to go back?
pg. 10 The Pigman on his way out to take Daggie away, hears a noise and sees a rat and lets Daggie go.
Thinking: How will Daggie prove himself to the rest of the animals on the farm
and the Pigman?
He will save the farm by swimming when the flood comes over the farm.
Thinking: Do you think that Daggie's mother wants Daggie to stay?
Of course she does. She loves her baby even though he is a runt. (p. 15)
Problem/Solution: (p. 23) Will Daggie be bothered by his friends picking on him about his feet? Will this become a problem for him?
No, Daggie doesn't let it bother him. He knows he is a certain way and is willing to live with it. He is just glad to be alive.
