SUMMARIZER
In this
section, the summer is ending and the cob has to teach the cygnets how to
fly. The cob puts on an exhibition of
flying for his children. All of the
cygnets are excited and a little scared about flying. They practice flying with their father and
mother. Louis is the first one to be
airborne and he loves flying. The next
day the trumpet swan family flies south to Montana
for the winter. They live at
Red
Rock Lake
for the winter with many other trumpet swans and other waterfowl. Louis decides that since he cannot talk he
wants to learn to read and write. He
flies off to find Sam Beaver because he knows Sam will help him. After he finds Sam, Sam invites him to stay
at his house for a while. Sam takes
Louis to school with him and asks the first grade teacher, Mrs. Hammerbotham,
if Louis can stay in her classroom to learn to read and write. The teacher refuses at first because she
doesn’t think a swan will be able to read and write, but Louis proves to her
that he can write by copying some words that she writes on the board. So Mrs. Hammerbotham allows Louis to stay in
her class.
