5.  I think the author used this word to let you hear how the rat was running around.  You can't physically hear it, but it gives you something to let you make up your own sound.

4.  Frantically- marked by uncontrolled emotion or disordered anxious activity. 

5.  I think the author used this word to show how fast and hurriedly the attempt was being done.

4.  Grotesquely- Fanciful, Bizarre, absurdly incongruous

5.  I think the author used this word to show how weird Daggie was and why he was the runt of the liter and what happens when you are the runt and are not developed as others like you.
