Chicken Skittle

By: Tara Stehle

One warm afternoon the sun was shining bright through the trees as Chicken Skittle was walking through the forest.

Chicken Skittle was walking because she was on a diet and knew that she needed to exercise and eat right.  As she approached her second mile-

“KERPLOP”

-Something fell on Chicken Skittle’s head.  She looked up only to realize that it was raining skittles!  The colors filled the sky like little pieces of rainbow falling from above.  Chicken Skittle was frightened…and hungry.  She knew that she could easily cheat on her diet and eat some skittles and no one would ever know, but she decided not to.  Chicken Skittle was too surprised by the fact that candies were dropping from the sky.  She started speed walking through the woods to go tell the King about what she had discovered.

Along the way Chicken Skittle passed her friend, the Wood Stork.

“How are you doing today Chicken Skittle?”  asked Wood Stork.

“I was okay until I found out that it is raining skittles in the forest!” replied Chicken Skittle.  “I was on my way to tell the King all about it.  Join me.”

The Wood Stork agreed, and he and Chicken Skittle were on their way to tell the King.  A few minutes later the two friends ran into another friend of theirs, Cackling Goose.

“Where are you two going in such a hurry?” questioned Cackling Goose.

“We are going to tell the King that it is raining skittles in the forest, Chicken Skittle saw it with her own eyes!” answered Wood Stork.

“Oh my, sounds thrilling! I think I will come along if you don’t mind.  It’s not every day that it rains skittles!” said Cackling Goose excitedly.

The three friends hurried along to go and tell the King about the skittles in the forest.  Not too long after they passed over the last bridge before the castle they saw Montezuma Quail.  Now, Montezuma Quail has always been a little nosy and of course she wanted to know where they were going in such a rush.

“We have to tell the King that the sky is raining skittles!” yelled Cackling Goose.

Well, this was just too exciting of an adventure to resist, so the four friends - Chicken Skittle, Wood Stork, Cackling Goose, and Montezuma Quail made their way to the

King’s Castle.  Just before they reached the foot of the stairs, Mountain Lion came striding by them, circling around them and licking his lips.

“My, my, my, what do we have here?” asked Mountain Lion.  You all look like you are  delicious, I mean, in a hurry.”

“Oh yes, we are.  We must tell the King that it is raining skittles in the forest.” Chicken Skittle told Mountain Lion.

“Raining what? Skittles? I don’t believe you.  I would have to see it with my own eyes.  Show me before you tell the King just in case you were seeing things.  He would believe five of us, rather than only one.” tricked Mountain Lion.

“I guess you’re right.  Let’s hurry though!  The King really should know about this as soon as possible.” cried Chicken Skittle as she and her friends began running in the opposite direction than the castle with Mountain Lion right behind them.

Chicken Skittle led her friends right to where it was raining skittles and low and behold, she was telling the truth.  Now Mountain Lion had a decision to make.  He was very hungry because he had not eaten since breakfast, and he knew that Chicken Skittle and her friends would make a fine meal.  He had to come up with a plan.  He decided that he would try to make the friends eat a lot of skittles so they get so full they cannot move, then he could enjoy each bird, one by one.

“Well, I see what you mean.  It sure is raining skittles here!  Let’s take advantage of this and eat a couple.  It’s not every day that this happens, you know.  A few won’t hurt.” said Mountain Lion cunningly.

Chicken Little was a very smart bird.  She decided to play Mountain Lion’s little game only turn it around on him.  She filled in the rest of her friends about what was going on in bird-talk because Mountain Lion wouldn’t be able to understand what they were saying.  Chicken Skittle told Mountain Lion that he had a great idea and Mountain Lion should go first, since he came up with it.  Mountain Lion was so hungry that he did not argue.  He started gobbling up every skittle he could get his paws on and he was so busy eating he didn’t notice that the others were only pretending to eat.

“Mmmm,” said Chicken Skittle winking to his friends “these sure are tasty.”

Mountain Lion couldn’t agree more.  Before he knew it he had eaten so much that his stomach started to hurt real bad.  A few minutes later Mountain Lion was lying on his back in pain.  He couldn’t move!   Chicken Skittle and her friends took this opportunity to run fast to the King’s Castle.  They agreed that they wouldn’t stop this time, it was straight to the King’s Castle and no one would get in their way.

When they arrived at the King’s Castle they told him the whole story and the King’s hunters followed Chicken Skittle’s directions on where they could find Mountain Lion.  Chicken Skittle and her friends realized that Mountain Lion wouldn’t be tricking anyone ever again.

By now it was dinner time.  Chicken Skittle, Wood Stork, Cackling Goose, Montezuma Quail and the King all sat around the gigantic dinner table and enjoyed a wonderful feast - Chicken Skittle felt that she deserved a little cheating on her diet.  Oh, and don’t worry - there was no poultry served at this meal.
