Summarizer

This book is set in 1864, in the south, during the civil war.

Eulinda is a thirteen year old slave girl that lives on a plantation. The name of the plantation is Pond Bluff.  Her master Mr. Hampton is also her father.  He has been married twice.  His first wife Miz Gertrude was very mean to her because she didn’t like the fact that he was Eulindas’ father.  Eulinda loved her little brother Zeke very much and to spite Eulinda Miz Gertrude sold him off.  She told everyone that he stole a ruby ring of hers.

Miz Gertrude died and Mr. Hampton married Mistis.  Mistis was much nicer then Miz Gertrude, but she also did things to spite Eulinda for the same reason that Miz Gertrude did.  She educated her and taught her how to write.

Eulinda also had a bigger brother who ran away to join the Yankee army.  Several of the other slaves (Moll and Sancho) also joined the army, but came back to the plantation, because of starvation and sickness.
