Review of the LES Department Fall Semester 2001-2002 Activities and Accomplishments

This past semester was a very productive and active one, thanks to the hard work of our faculty and staff.  We initiated a number of new projects, were highly visible at major academic conferences, garnered a new grant, and had the opportunity to bring on staff two exceptionally well-qualified individuals.  Specifically:

Initiated the on-line LES Perspectives with the guidance of Dr. Richard (Dick) Riedl and our graduate assistant, Myrla Gibbons Doxey.

Established the Scholars Roundtable to bring together our department’s tenure track, non-tenured faculty to discuss scholarship and grant opportunities.

Held three highly successful LES Colloquia that focused on a multicultural theme. Included sessions led by the MSA , Higher Education (Drs. Bonham, Boylan, Claxton, Hall, Smith, and Sutton), and ASU Student Development programs.

The National Center for Developmental Education hosted its third national research conference in Charlotte and we had several faculty presenting their research. Faculty included was:  Drs. Bonham; Boylan; O’Neal; Olson; Safer; Smith; Sutton; and White.

The MSA program received notification that we were the only North Carolina higher education institution asked to participate in a three year Southern Regional Education Board (SREB) grant. Dr. Linda O’Neal took the lead on this project and with the assistance of the MSA faculty (Drs. Hall, Olson, Smith, and White) we received this honor.

Dr. Linda Veltze continued with her voluminous work documenting and highlighting the history and deeds of Mrs.Grinton.

Dr. Carol Truett was awarded a one-year scholarly leave beginning the 2002-2003 academic year to pursue research in the area of Library Science.

Faculty presented at national conferences including papers given by Dr. Michael Dale and Dr. Gayle Turner of the Foundations area.

Several faculty were in print in scholarly journals this semester including Drs: Bronack; Maycock; Olson; Safer; Smith; and White.

Dr. Tom Jamison continued to review scholarly manuscripts for several nationally recognized academic journals.

New Fall semester extension cohort classes were begun in the MSA, Higher Education, and Instructional Technology programs.

The Office of Extension approved a new Instructional Technology cohort with a K-12 track in Mac Dowell County beginning spring 2002.  This new cohort was initiated through the efforts of Dr. John Tashner.

Hired as our new Administrative Secretary, Ms. Karen Laws, and as our new Office Assistant IV, Ms. Jenny Ware; two very competent and exceptional individuals.  You can read their personal bios by clicking on the Staff icon on our homepage.
