About Students

Sandra  W. McLain

Sandra Woodie McLain was born in Jefferson, North Carolina and grew up in North Wilkesboro, NC.  She is the third of four children born to Eddie (deceased) and Evelyn Woodie.  she has two brothers and a sister.

Sandra graduated with honors from North Wilkes high School where she developed an interest in working with Special Education students.  She is also a graduate of Wilkes community College and attended UNC-Chapel Hill before graduating from ASU in 1983 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Special Education.

Sandra married Tony McLain, also a native of North Wilkesboro and an ASU graduate of the class of 1985.  Tony is the National Account Manager for Valspar Paints.  They have no children, but are very well trained by their dog, Bogey; a thirteen-year-old beagle/basset mix.  The McLain's enjoy traveling as often as their schedules allow.

Sandra is currently on an educational leave of absence from the Wilkes County Schools where she has taught Special Education students in a cross-categorical resource room for the last 18 years.  Sandra is seeking a Master's Degree in Instructional Technology and is a graduate assistant to Dr. Richard Riedl in the Department of Leadership and Educational Studies. Her placement is with the Media and Technology Services Department in the Wilkes County Schools.  Sandra finds her new roles, those of a student and a graduate assistant, invigorating and challenging.  She hopes to work as a Technology Facilitator, and would like to combine her experience in Special Education with technology in some way.

Cindy Witherspoon

Cindy is a current Library Science student and Media Specialist at Boiling Springs School is Boiling Springs, NC.  She has a grant proposal (Charles I. Dover Teacher Incentive Grant) accepted by the Cleveland County Schools Educational Foundation.  Cindy's grant dealt with using children's literature for character education.  The grant bought a floor puppet theater, puppets, and books to carry out these goals.  She applied what she had learned in her children's literature course and in storytelling to write this grant.
