Hunter Boylan, Ph.D.
Dr. Boylan was recently interviewed and quoted in the December 2001 Black Issues in Higher Education. The title of the article was, "Rhetoric Verses Reality", which examines how colleges confront the issues associated with remediation. Also, Dr. Boylan's book titled, "What works: Research-Based Best Practices in Developmental Education" was recently published. This publication is a result of the collaboration between the Continuous Quality Improvement Network and the NCDE.
Michael Dale, Ph.D.
Dr. Dale has been selected as a recipient of one of the University of North Carolina Board of Governors' Excellence in Teaching Awards. This was a highly competitive statewide process and truly acknowledges the exceptional efforts of Dr. Dale in the classroom and in his preparation relative to his teaching methodology. Dr. Dale will receive special recognition on stage as a teaching award recipient during the Fall 2002 Convocation in addition to being honored at the luncheon hosted by Chancellor Brokowski and Mrs. Brokowski on Convocation Day.
George Olson, Ph.D.
Dr. Olson has been elected to the Board of the National Association of Test Directors (NATD), Dr. Olson assumed office at the annual AERA meeting in April. To learn more about NATD you can visit http://natd.org.
Linda O'Neal, Ed.D.
Dr. O'Neal recently had her essay titled "Meditation" published in the May 2002 revised edition of Integrative Medicine: The Mind-Body Prescription (2nd ed.).
Paul Smith, Ed.D.
At the March 22, 2002 meeting of the Board of Trustees of Appalachian State University, Dr. Smith's promotion to the rank of Associate Professor was approved. This is certainly a well deserved acknowledgment of Dr. Smith's excellent record of scholarship, teaching, and service, not only to the department, but to the college and university as well.
Gayle Turner, Ph.D.
Congratulations to Dr. Turner for coordinating and bringing to fruition a highly successful Core Curriculum seminar with the invited author and educator Dr. Jean Anyon.
Linda Veltze, Ph.D.
On Tuesday, April 30th, Dr. Veltze was an invited luncheon speaker at the Burke County Central Office meeting. This luncheon included all of the principals and librarians in Burke County North Carolina.
Stephen White, D.A., and Linda O'Neal, Ed.D.
Dr. White and Dr. O'Neal recently had their article titled, "A New Policy to Transform Teacher Education: Doctoral Preparation of Teacher-Scholars" published in the Journal of Instructional Psychology (2002), Volume 29, Number 1. The essence of the article is that "The Doctor of Arts Degree (D.A.) as developed by the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching to improve postsecondary education teaching should now be employed to improve teacher education."
