What's New in LES....
On Wednesday, April 24, 2002, Anita F. Ware, Ed.D., presented on "Beating the Odds: Case Studies of Three North Carolina Elementary Schools' Success with Student Achievement" at the Broyhill Inn Conference Center. The presentation focused on a recent study conducted on three elementary schools in North Carolina that have "beaten the odds" in improving student achievement. Each of these three schools made remarkable accomplishments in promoting achievement with students who have not traditionally been successful. The discussion included the three ways in which these schools have achieved success, 1) concentrating instruction on student performance, 2) creating inviting school climates, and 3) guiding reform through energetic leadership, and how their patterns of performance have transformed their schools from places where failure was often expected to places where everyone now expects to achieve. This interesting and informative LES Colloquium had a strong contingent of school district personnel for the presentation and discussion.
Dr. Ware is currently a faculty member with the Principals' Executive Program, a constituent program in the University of North Carolina's Center for School Leadership Development. She co-directs the Instructional Leadership Initiative at PEP that involves school based reform and research with eleven high poverty, high minority schools in North Carolina.
